Speaking at DICE, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime mentioned the possibility of Diablo III for console, saying that “It’s something that we’re actually doing an investigation into to see if that could make sense.”
Morhaim reckons that “you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console,” and more importantly to shareholders, Diablo III for console might also sell very well.
He admits, however, that there are a “number of issues” that would have to be solved. First on our list would be controls. While Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light showed that an isometric hack and slash game can work with a console control pad, Blizzard will want to make sure that the experience is as good as that provided by the mouse-keyboard combination.
Diablo III still does not have even a vague release date. With Blizzard sticking to its usual “when it’s done” release date tagline, predictions range from mid 2011 to late 2012 or even later. It is currently only confirmed for release on PC.
