Legality of “Revenge Porn” hits South African courts after Margaret van Wyk scandal

29 August 2016

The Film and Publications Board plan to tackle the issue of “Revenge Porn” head on, reports htxt.

Revenge porn refers to the act of publishing nude pictures of people online without their permission, and has become a growing problem with the prevalence of modern smartphones.

The board plans to criminalise the unauthorised publication of nude images through the proposed Film and Publications Amendment Bill.

The amendments being introduced by the bill come with the added pressure of the major scandal surrounding Margaret van Wyk this past week.

Margaret van Wyk has been trending on Facebook and Twitter, following the posting of an alleged image of her genitals online.

This image was circulated without her permission.
