Wondering why everyone in your office is talking like a pirate?
Today, Monday 19 September is officially “Talk like a pirate day” (yes, really), giving you an excuse to show the world your best Johnny Depp impression.
For those of you not familiar with the lingo or just wanting to get in on the festivities, we have comprised a helpful list of Pirate terms (courtesy of the official Pirate Glossary) to get you started:
- “ahoy” – An interjection used to hail a ship or a person, or to attract attention.
- “Avast!” – A command meaning stop or desist, from the Italian “basta”, meaning stop.
- “Arr!” – An exclamation.
- “black spot” – A black smudge on a piece of paper used by pirates as a threat. A black spot is often accompanied by a written message specifying the threat. Most often a black spot represents a death threat.
- “blow the man down” – To kill someone.
- “crack Jenny’s tea cup” – To spend the night in a house of ill repute.
- “dance the hempen jig” – To hang.
