Tomb Raider movie reboot in the works

8 March 2011

Variety has reported that a movie reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise is in the works. Producers Graham King and Tim Headington (operating under GK Films) have acquired the rights from Square Enix.

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the Tomb Raider phenomenon,” said King.

The previous silver screen outings of Tomb Raider did rather well at the box office, no doubt due in part to the buxom (and irksome) Angelina Jolie in the role of Lara Croft. Variety reports that the two movies, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) raked in a combined worldwide gross of US$432 million (±R2.987 billion).

The movie is being aimed for a 2013 release, so no need to get too excited just yet. We do have a Tomb Raider game reboot to look forward to in the meantime. The game hasn’t been dated, but there is a rumour likely spawned of gamer hopefulness and capitalist greed that pegs the title for a September 2011 release.

As for the movie reboot, I’m hoping that it won’t prove to be a fatuous, ill-conceived example of Hollywood bottom-of-the-barrel-dredging slop – unlike the first two attempts.
