The PC industry has shown a decline in shipments for eight consecutive quarters, according to research by Gartner.

Worldwide PC shipments fell 5.7% in the third quarter of 2016 to 68.9 million units, stated the research, marking two years of consistent drops and the longest decline the history of the PC market.

“The PC is not a high-priority device for the majority of consumers, so they do not feel the need to upgrade their PCs as often as they used to,” said Gartner.

This was attributed to improvements in the capabilities of smartphones and the continued use of tablets as a laptop replacement.
