The most frustrating enemies in gaming

10 November 2016

The most crucial part of any game is its enemies.

An enemy makes our journey worthwhile, and at the same time, is the reason why we are doing what we are doing in the first place. Sometimes they give us XP, the loot we are searching for, and often will lead us to victory.

However, there are moments in games that are just down right frustrating due to some enemies that make it their goal to irritate us.

Here are some of the most frustrating enemies in gaming, and why they should just die or be coded out of the game.

Shank – Destiny

The Shank, or Skank as I say, was a weak enemy last year in Destiny. However, when Rise of Iron released, they became the most frustrating enemy in the game.

You cannot see them, as they hover around you in groups of 100 and slowly shoot their pathetic little turret at you, until you die.

They are so weak, but due to their inability to fight alone, they will hunt you down in pack and just float in front of you and mow you down.

They also have no critical hit box, so you cannot one-shot them.

Hammer Bros – Mario Bros

Remember running through the levels of the classic Mario Bros, encountering these sons of guns, and trying your hardest to predict where their hammer will fly in the air, only to clapped on the head on your way through?

It is like the hammers had tracking, and no matter how much we tried, it would always hit us.

All these guys did was jump around across platforms and toss their hammers at us, completely ruining our day. No skill at all on their part, just the spamming of hammers.

Slimer – Duke Nukem 3D

I know the Slimer might look like a pile of goo, which it is, but it is far more annoying than you think.

The Slimers would always appear around large areas where we would be spamming shots out of our rocket launchers.

These little buggers would then crawl up our face, obscuring our view, only to have us shoot a rocket into the wall, destroying both us, and the green goo from Hell.

There was no other feeling in the world than crawling through a vent with no idea where you are going, only to spend most of the time looking into these grub’s ugly mugs as they chewed our face off.

Tonberry – Final Fantasy

The Tonberry is like the weird kid in high school that never spoke to anyone, and just moped around the class all silent and freaky-like. One day, the child just snaps and everyone loses their minds.

The same can be said for the Tonberry, who slowly creeps up to you in a battle, and when he is standing right in front of you, he slowly pulls out his knife and stabs you, either instantly killing you or leaving you with 1 health.

The Tonberry also has a massive amount of health, making battles with them last forever.

Zubat – Pokemon

Just when you think you are on your way out of the dark cave, you can see the light head, and just want to leave before another Pokemon appears.

Too late, a battle starts and as you anticipate a new Pokemon that you might add to your roster, it is another darn Zubat.

Zubats have been the disease of Pokemon since the beginning of time.

If it is a Pokemon game, then chances are Zubats will be used as bloat battles. Even Pokemon GO suffers from the constant appearance of Zubat.

Eagles – Far Cry

Strolling through the gorgeous world of Far Cry, not a care in the world. In the distance, we hear someone shout “EAGLE!”.

We know that our lives now hang in the brink as we see a massive bird fly above us. We run for cover, but it finds us and attacks us like a rabid cat. Trying shoot it down with arrows proves useless, so we pull out our flamethrower and burn it alive. We then pull out the glass that is stabbed us in the arm with as we heal up.

The eagles in Far Cry were overpowered and irritating. Who knew that eagles could hate human beings so much that they would try rip our eyes out as if we were field mice?

Headcrabs – Half Life

Although these tick-like creatures seem small, they are deadly and an annoyance in Half Life. The leap towards you and try and attack you.

They leap onto their victims, sinking their claws into their skull, and giving them control over them.

As they run towards you with long sharp claws that can tear your skin apart, the only thing that goes through your mind is that the person chasing you is clearly not Tom from HR anymore.

Cliff Racers – Morrowind

Cliff Racers are just like sky rats. They just fly above you and kill you.

If you were a melee class in Morrowind, then chances are you thought about restarting a few times in 2002. There was just no way to kill them without spending a couple of minutes jumping and attacking them.

Those who used spells had it easy, as you could easily just shoot them with something, but still, they would fly around, and avoid every shot, shooting up your blood pressure faster than you could say heart attack.

Chime Maiden – Bloodborne

As if Bloodborne was not hard enough, you would now have to face crazed woman who ring a bell that summon more enemies to try and tear the flesh from your bones. These Chime Maidens would just hide away in the distance, and you would hear a little ring followed by a horde of enemies.

The only way to stop the enemies from coming is to slay the Chime Maiden, who would always be hidden away in the back of an area or on a ledge above you. The troll level was unmeasurable.

Never encountered the Chime Maiden in Bloodborne… Hmmm, perhaps I should look for them in my second playthrough.
