Drama has been unfolding this week in the form of the Anonymous hacking outfit targeting Sony in retribution for their legal pursuit of PS3 hackers George ‘GeoHot’ Hotz and Alexander ‘graf_chokolo’ Egorenkov.
The first strike of their offensive was to use Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against Sony websites, and even affecting the PSN. Sony soon responded by employing the services of anti-DDoS specialists Prolexic – a move which has mitigated the impact of the assault.
Anonymous issues demands
Having made clear that their threats are not just idle, Anonymous has stated that the DDoS offensive was merely an introductory wake up call for Sony, and they should expect things to escalate if their demands are not met. Anonymous’ demands were issued through what has become a trademark video release statement of intent.
• Sony must allow for end-user modification of the PS3, as was available prior to the 3.21 firmware update.
• Sony must end any attempts to bring legal action to alter a product they own.
• Sony must not pursue legal action against any collected IP address.
