Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) televisions have dominated the in-home entertainment market for decades, but after the introduction of flat panel televisions the fate of CRT TVs was sealed.
While most South African stores still carry a limited range of entry level CRT TVs, larger plasma, LCD and LED televisions have taken over as the TV of choice.
The demise of the CRT is accelerated by the falling prices of flat panel TVs, making LCD and plasma TVs affordable to most working families.
Flat panel TV prices plummeting
The last twelve months have seen a particularly large decline in television prices, especially when it comes to higher end LCD and LED sets.
These price reductions were fuelled, among other things, by technology advancements, increased competition and a stronger Rand.
It is now possible to buy a 40’’ full HD LCD TV for under R5,000 while the price of the 50″ plasma TVs have dipped under R7,000. The price for LED and 3D LED TVs have declined even more than LCD and plasma TVs.
In July last year, for example, the LG LX9500 LED 3D television retailed for R41,999. Less than a year later the same television was sold on promotion at Hi-Fi Corporation for R12,999 and at Dion Wired for R13,999.
The following table provides an overview of some of the television price reductions seen in South Africa over the last year.
