Prevent Windows 10 from restarting after installing updates

Windows 10

There is a way to permanently prevent Windows 10 from automatically rebooting your PC after installing updates, and the full instructions have been published on Winaero.

Windows 10 will reboot your machine after installing certain updates – shutting down everything on restarting.

To prevent this, see the steps below.

Disable the “reboot” scheduled task

Open the Control Panel, navigate to System and Security\Administrative Tools, and then open the Task Scheduler.

In Task Scheduler, open the Microsoft folder in the Task Scheduler Library, then the Windows folder, and find the UpdateOrchestrator folder (Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > UpdateOrchestrator).

Right click on the “Reboot” task and disable it.

Although this step will prevent Windows from rebooting itself after updates have been installed, users report it can re-enable this task automatically.

Stop Windows from re-enabling automatic rebooting

To prevent Windows from re-enabling the task, do the following:

  • Open file explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator.
  • Rename the file “Reboot” to “Reboot.bak”, then create a folder called “Reboot”.
