Why a sugar tax is Total bullshit…. As a “member state of the UN…. commitments on food and nutrition”. Yet SA has left the ICC? Call a spade a spade; this is a blatant attempt by the government to, excuse the pun, sugar coat it’s pathetic attempts in increase tax collection, and it’s looking desperate. What’s next, a salt tax? How about a coffee tax. Oh you know what’s a great idea? How about a Sun Tax for your solar panels (you laugh, but this has happened in Spain).
I have a friend in the bottling industry, and works for AB InBev (they bottle products for coke in SA), and he told me if they were to levy a sugar tax, the price of all drinks would increase by 20% (obviously). What will then follow is industry wide layoffs as sales will be directly affected. We are talking about salespeople, truck drivers, factory workers, the lot. Lets not forget about the reduction in turnover for small business owners that rely on these drinks for an income. The economical impact of the sugar tax has not been investigated enough, but it’s clearly going to impact a lot of people. People losing their jobs and sources of income? Sounds really good for South Africa. *insert thumbs up emoji*
