MultiChoice is looking into merging DStv Now and Showmax, but has no firm plan for how or when it might happen, said DStv Digital Media head Graeme Cumming.
DStv Now is a streaming service available to DStv subscribers, and includes live TV channels and on-demand content.
Showmax – which costs R99 per month as a standalone service – was recently bundled for free with DStv Now for DStv Premium subscribers.
The move followed Naspers announcing that Showmax Africa and DStv Digital Media would be merged under a new division, which has yet to be named.
Cheaper packages
Cumming said there are currently no plans to give Showmax to subscribers on cheaper DStv packages. “Right now, it’s a Premium value-add,” he said.
There are also currently no plans to partner with other streaming service providers such as Netflix and Hulu, although Cumming said they are open to the idea.
“Partnerships are inevitable, but right now it’s only Showmax.”
He added that there is a conscious effort on their part to bring DStv Now and Showmax together.
“We are trying to bring the best of both worlds to our customers,” said Cumming.
