Duke Nukem: Forever review roundup

13 June 2011

Arguably the most long awaited game ever released hit store shelves on Friday, and reviews are already beginning to stream in. Sadly for Duke fans, things are not looking too good for his first outing this side of the 21st century. Review scores have been mixed, although the game has been panned by numerous industry heavyweights, including Eurogamer, Joystiq and IGN.

We are still playing the game, so expect our review up in the next few days. In the meantime, here’s what some international publications have had to say:

PC Gamer 80/100

Don’t expect a miracle. Duke is still the hero we love, but struggles to keep up with modern times. Crude humor and classic weaponry keep him in the game. More

Eurogamer 3/10

In the end, you feel every year of Duke Nukem Forever’s ridiculous, fractured development seeping out of each unsatisfying frame. More

Joystiq 2/5

What has, at long last, been committed to a disc and placed into a box might have been alright a dozen years ago, but by today’s standards it simply doesn’t hold up. More

IGN 5.5/10

Duke Nukem Forever isn’t a revitalization of the early days of the first-person shooter genre or a middle-finger to the increasingly complex and sophisticated nature of videogame entertainment. It’s a muddled, hypocritical exercise in irritation with solid shooting mechanics and decent encounter design. There’s some dumb fun to be had in Duke Nukem Forever, but the game tries hard to ensure it’s only fleeting. More

D-Pad Magazine 2/10

Duke Nukem Forever is a strange enough novelty all on its own, but when all is said and done, it is a vastly aged shooter that is left trailing in the dust of its modern contemporaries. More

Duke Nukem Forever is currently sitting on a Metacritic score of 50/100 on Xbox 360, 62/100 on PS3, and 76 on PC, although sadly, the majority of reviews have been written based on the Xbox 360 version, making it a more accurate benchmark at this stage.

Looks like we may be better off remembering Duke like this
