Microsoft has announced that it has released its DirectStorage API technology to game developers, allowing games to utilise the latest PC storage technology fully.
DirectStorage allows for significantly faster loading times due to optimised NVMe SSD access.
This means games can now perform more than one in/out process at a time, enabling the speed of SSDs to be fully utilised.
It also allows for assets to be directly transferred to the GPU, resulting in a substantial increase in efficiency.
Microsoft hasn’t yet released the names of any PC games that will use the technology. However, new Microsoft studios or Xbox exclusive titles will likely be the first to benefit from this technology.
DirectStorage will be made available to both Windows 10 and 11 users, but Microsoft recommended users upgrade to Windows 11 as it is better optimised for the technology.
Microsoft will share more details on the subject at the 22 March Game Developers Conference.
