First Overwatch 2 beta test ends

18 May 2022

Blizzard announced the close of the first PvP beta period for Overwatch 2 which lasted from April 26 to May 17.

During this first beta period, Overwatch 2 saw notable changes — for example, Zenyatta received an all-new ability that improves the way players operate support heroes.

The Overwatch team also made improvements to the game’s UI in a way that mirrors other competitive games and is looking to create a version of Overwatch that is more fast-paced in its new 5v5 format than the original game.

The previous game featured six-player teams, whereas the new 5v5 format will include one tank, two support, and two DPS players per team.

“The Overwatch Team would like to take a moment to convey a heartfelt thank you to all the players that took part in our first beta,” said the game’s director Aaron Keller in a blog post.

“It can be scary putting something that is not finished out there and asking for people’s real and valid criticisms, But the reason we do it is important — to make a better game.”

“Tests like this are a vital part of the process of improving Overwatch, and we can’t wait to apply what we’ve learned from the beta to the game,” added Keller.

There is no information on when the game’s next beta period will begin or whether it’ll be invite-only or open.

Blizzard said it would share details on its plans for the game and how to gain access to the next beta period during its next Overwatch 2 event on 16 June.

There is still no confirmed release date for Overwatch 2, but it is still expected to launch sometime in 2023.

New Overwatch event

Blizzard also announced Overwatch’s Anniversary Remix Vol. 2 in-game event yesterday.

The event will offer players the chance to unlock new variants of select legendary skins as well as event rewards for completing and winning matches.

The event will run from 17 May to 7 June 2022.

All of the new event skins and returning legendary skins will carry over into Overwatch 2, making the anniversary of the remix event a worthwhile venture for fans.
