Nintendo preservation project successful acquires 23,000 data dumps to save 3DS and Wii U DLC

10 April 2024

The SpotPass Archival Project has successfully acquired over 23,000 data dumps to preserve Nintendo DLC before the Wii U and 3DS servers were shut down.

On Monday, Nintendo shut down the Wii U and 3DS servers and its now-defunct SpotPass program – an always-online system that provided notifications and game updates to the 3DS and Wii.

These updates frequently included free DLC that could have been installed without users ever even noticing.

Understanding that this data was important, the SpotPass Archival Project asked console owners to dump their data.

This proved a huge success, with the SpotPass Archival Project receiving 15,579 3DS dumps and 7,553 Wii U dumps.

The SpotPass Archival Project has indicated it intends to establish an archive of all the data they were able to acquire before the shutdown – making this content available long after Nintendo has pulled the plug.

The project also plans on archiving old SpotPass data for a few specific games such as the StreetPass Mii Plaza.

They indicated they would be sharing more on what this entail and other future plans they may have later.
