DICE has confirmed that if you want to play the PC version of Battlefield 3, you will need to install and create and EA Origin account.
The revelation was delivered via DICE’s Daniel Martos’ twitter feed, and refers specifically to the retail version of the game.
Battlefield 3 will not be released on Steam, although it will be available from other digital distributors. It is unclear whether an Origin account will be required to play digitally bought versions of the game not purchased through Origin, but our guess is that it will.
EA has stated that it will not be releasing Battlefield 3 on Steam because it “restricts our ability to directly support players”. EA is trying to build Origin into a one-stop platform for the sale, maintenance and networking of its PC games, and since there is no room for this with Steam, we can expect it to become standard practice for EA to not release games on Steam.
Battlefield 3 is being released on 28 October in SA. You can sign-up an Origins account here in the meantime.
You can even pre-order a digital copy of Battlefield 3 from the Origin store for R349,99. In comparison Kalahari.net has the game listed for R399,95 and Take2.co.za has it for R352, so if you’re not limited by data consumption, then the Origin store looks like a good option.
