Sony makes controversial changes to PSN content access policy

4 November 2011

Sony fans, the days of playing your PlayStation Store content on an unlimited number of devices (okay, five devices previously) are almost over. I know, it’s hard to accept.

“We’d like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content,” reads the official announcement over on the PlayStation Blog. “As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated.”

Specifically, a user’s purchased content is going to be restricted to two PS3s and two PSPs (including PSP-1000/2000/3000 series, as well as the PSPgo system), and applies to everything bought after 18 November.

Users will reportedly be able to manage a device’s activation status “through each device” itself, while Sony is also prepping to launch a dedicated website for device activation and deactivation.

Presumably some limit will be set on the number of activations and deactivations allowed within a time period to preclude the obvious (if tedious) exploit in the system.
