MyGaming’s most disappointing games of 2011

2011 almost feels like a distant memory. Sure 2012 may only be 3 days old, but last year feels as forgotten as our recently packed-away Christmas decorations.

It was a great year for gamers. We were spoiled rotten with the likes of Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, The Witcher 2 and loads more.

However, it was not all sunshine and butterflies, and 2011 came with more than its fair share of disappointments. MyGaming staff recently gathered around to deliberate on some of the year’s highs and some of its lows. Using a top-secret and complex scoring system, we isolated the following titles as the most disappointing games of 2011.

Duke Nukem Forever

It may be an obvious choice, but that’s because it was without a doubt one of the year’s most anticipated titles, as well as one of its worst.

We had a lot riding on id’s latest brainchild, and it failed momentously at living up to our expectations. The PC version was particularly buggy and poorly built, making it one of the year’s absolute low points.

Modern Warfare 3

I’m not sure what we were expecting from Activision’s most recent cash-cow iteration, but somewhere between not having ranked dedicated servers and introducing nothing new, the game failed to impress any of us.

Dead Island

One of the year’s most promising new IPs was sadly also one of its most disappointing games. Dead Island is a sandbox survival horror game in which players must find their way off a tropical paradise overrun by zombie. Sounds amazing right? Despite its epic premise, Dead Island failed to capitalize on the hype leading up to its launch.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Although it was by no means an absolute failure, we found Skyrim’s buggy release code a little jarring. By most accounts it’s still a great game, but we’re waiting for the modding community to make develop it into something truly special.

Dragon Age II

Easily one of 2011’s most contentious games, Dragon Age II lost a lot of what made the first game so special by mixing up the combat system. A lacklustre story and lack of unique environments also left us wanting more from Dragon Age 2.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars 3

Need for Speed: The Run

Number 389 in the Need for Speed series (not really), The Run failed to establish itself as the high-octane arcade racer that it could have been, and instead adamantly sunk itself into a sea of mediocrity.
