Fastest rising gaming search terms in 2011

9 January 2012

According to Googlezeitgeist.com, a site which tracks the most searched terms on Google, “Battlefield 3” was the fifth fastest rising search term of 2011, coming in just below “Casey Anthony”, “Ryan Dunn”, “Google+” and “Rebecca Black”.

“Battlefield 3” managed to come in just ahead of “iPhone 5”, “Steve Jobs” and “iPad 2”, and was the only video game search term that cracked the global top ten.

Sadly, “Battlefield 3” did not crack the South African top ten searched terms, which were as follows:

1.    WhatsApp
2.    Rugby World Cup
3.    Royal Wedding
4.    Facebook
5.    Amy Winehouse
6.    Adele
7.    Gadaffi
8.    iPhone 5
9.    Velvet Sky
10.    Steve Jobs

Battlefield 3 also did not crack the top ten in the United States or the United Kingdom. In fact, no video games made the US top ten, although Fifa 12 came in at third place in the UK, and Minecraft came in at 8.

Interestingly, Minecraft was the fastest rising search term in France and Germany in 2011.

Googlezeitgeist takes billions of searches in Google, and takes into account Google Trends, Google Insights and internal data tools – they filter out double entries and spam, and basically use a huge wealth of information and data to reach the results – so for a game to make it onto the global list means it made pretty big waves.
