The Independent Games Festival Student Showcase award-winning platformer game One and One Story has come up for sale on iTunes. Except the developer, Mattia Traverso, didn’t put it there, and knew nothing about it. Oops.
The 18-year-old has accused Vietnamese mobile developer Afoli, JSC. of stealing the art assets and design of the game, which it then used to create an “HD” version that’s been selling for 99 cents on iTunes since Wednesday.
Traverso’s game has been free to play through various Flash websites since 2011. Traverso said that he had not encrypted the game’s code before releasing it. He said he’s tried to contact Apple multiple times, but is yet to receive a response.
According to Traverso, “The game is exactly the same, but done worse. It was coded from scratch.”
He also tweeted, “The assets were stolen… and stretched.”
The developer in question, Afoli, appears to sell a number of “HD remakes” of otherwise free flash games on the iTunes store, including Gold Mine Ultimate HD, Crow in Hell HD and Mushroom Farm Defense HD.
It isn’t known whether or not Afoli has any legitimate rights or permissions to sell these games; although given Traverso’s outrage it looks dubious.
Traverso is looking to have the game removed via a Digital Millennium Copyright Act filing.
