Quake Live Monster Queues

25 February 2009

There has been a lot of talk surrounding Id software’s Quake Live, which had its Beta opened to the public today. The game is based on Quake 3 Arena, but requires only a browser to log in and play.

Following a relatively successful year of closed testing, the Quake Live Beta experience is now available to all PC users, and is completely free of charge.

The developers have a lot planned for the browser based shooter, including enhanced social networking and the inclusion of leader boards as well as friends lists.

The Good news

The game requires minimal system specs and is free to play. All one has to do is go along to the official site and sign up. Once an account has been opened, the user can theoretically play on any connected PC.

The Bad news

Since the Beta was opened to the public, the Quake Live servers appear to have become seriously congested. After already experiencing server down time, they are now back up and running, but the queues are absolutely horrendous.

I have been logged in and queuing for over an hour, and am now number 18992 in line. And you thought home affairs was bad? Many users are reporting that they are in the region of 65000 in line for Quake Live Beta.

Also, many local users here in South Africa are reporting high latencies of around 400ms. With no sign of a local server coming anytime soon, we are not sure if things will get any better.
