Battlefield Heroes goes live

25 June 2009

Originally scheduled for launch earlier this year, EA’s Battlefield Heroes is finally available to gamers free of charge and with no subscription fees.

The cartoon styled multiplayer action title was developed by EA Digital Illusions who is best known for its previous Battlefield games as well as Mirror’s Edge.

The game is the first to be launched under EA’s new “Play 4 Free” revenue model. The game is completely free to download and play, but players can use real world currency to purchase in-game bonuses, such as abilities which allow players to level up faster and of course limited edition weapons and items.

The game is also being funded largely by advertising revenue. The adverts will appear in the front end of the game but EA has promised that the actual gameplay experience will remain free from advertising.

EA is aiming to reach as wide an audience as possible, and reports indicate that the gameplay will not be as precise and demanding as previous Battlefield games. The game has also been designed to run on a wide range of PCs.

In order to play gamers are required to download a 4GB plugin. There is currently no sign of a local Battlefield Heroes server, so expect latencies to be high at this point in time.
