World of Warcraft players must move to Battle.net

15 October 2009

Blizzard has announced that from the 11th of November World of Warcraft players globally, except those in Europe, will be required to merge their World of Warcraft account with their Battle.net account to log into their games.

This is part of Blizzard’s documented intention to move all of its games and players onto Battle.net. When the developer announced that it would not be including LAN support in its upcoming Starcraft 2 titles it added that part of the reason was in order to provide gamers with a singular online platform service for all titles.

The move will provide a number of new features.

“We’re getting ready to launch the new version of Battle.net, which will include a number of new communication and community features designed to enhance World of Warcraft play, such as cross-realm World of Warcraft chat, cross-game chat (with the launch of StarCraft II), real-life friends lists, and more.” said the developer in the Battle.net FAQ section.

As a gesture of thanks Blizzard will also be issuing all World of Worcraft users who move their accounts over to Battle.net with a gift as compensation.
“Existing players that merge their World of Warcraft account with a Battle.net account will receive a new World of Warcraft in-game penguin pet.”
