Digital distributors won’t support Modern Warfare 2

9 November 2009

It seems that Activision is not making many friends of late, with a vocal collection of PC gamers boycotting the game altogether due to a lack of dedicated servers.

Now numerous digital game resellers have stated that they will not sell the game due to its reliance on Valve’s STEAM platform.

Like many games released before it, Modern Warfare 2 will require users to install and opperate the game through STEAM. STEAM will manage the game’s DRM, updates, anti-cheat features and multiplayer match making. In response, Direct2Drive, GamersGate and Impulse have stated that they will not sell the game.

“We believe strongly that when you buy a game from us, you shouldn’t be forced to install and run a 3rd party software client to be able to play the game you purchased,” reads an announcement on Direct2Drive.

While many angry gamers will rejoice at the move from D2D, it is worth mentioning that the online retailer has sold previous games that required STEAM, such as Dawn of War 2 and Empire: Total War.
