Nintendo EU store time-restricts access to 18+ content

Nintendo of Europe has restricted access to 18-rated content on the Wii U eShop, allowing users to only access that content at a specific time of day.

This means players are unable to watch trailers for 18-rated Wii U games or buy 18-rated content.

When a user complained, Nintendo issued the following message:

“Dear customer, we would like to let you know that Nintendo has always aimed to offer gameplay experiences suited to all age groups, observing carefully all the relevant regulations regarding content access that are present in the various European countries.

“We have thus decided to restrict the access to content which is unsuitable to minors (PEGI) to the 11pm – 3am time window.”

The family friendly approach is fine and all, but the time window seems a tad unreasonable – if you want to watch the ZombiU or Assassin’s Creed 3 game trailer, you can only do it in a narrow 4 hour window? What about people who don’t even have children? Shouldn’t these restrictions be optional? Nintendo is yet to address these concerns.

When attempting to access restricted content, users will be greeted with the following message: “You cannot view this content. The times during which this content can be viewed have been restricted.”

This message does appear on accounts with no parental controls set.
