Metacritic anounces its 10 best games of 2009

14 December 2009

The world’s biggest review score aggregating website Metacritic has released its list of the ten highest rated games of the year.

Metacritic takes the scores awarded to games from a variety of publications and averages them out to get a “meta-score”. Many consider this the best and most holistic way of judging the quality of a game.

Metacritic’s top 10 of 2009

1.    Uncharted 2  96/100 (PS3)
2.    Modern Warfare 2  94/100 (360)
3.    Modern Warfare 2  94/100 (PS3)
4.    Street Fighter IV  94/100 (PS3)
5.     GTA: Chinatown Wars  93/100 (DS)
6.    Braid  93/100 (PS3)
7.    Street Fighter IV   93/100 (360)
8.    God of War Collection  92/100 (PS3)
9.    Batman: Arkham Asylum  92/100 (360)
10.    Forza 3 92/100 (360)

Uncharted 2 has been viewed by many as Sony’s trump card for 2009. Apart from that, the higher end of the list is dominated by multiplatform releases. Street Fighter IV curiously scored a percent higher on PS3 than on 360, and Braid finally saw a release on Sony’s console after enjoying critical success on Xbox Live.

Batman Arkham: Asylum scored a percent higher on 360 than PS3 and PC, earning it a spot in the top 10, and Microsoft’s exclusive racing sim just makes the list tying with Batman: AA and the God of War Collection.

While PS3 fans are celebrating the list as a win for the console, the Xbox 360 had the most games scoring over 75 with 88 in total making the cut. This is largely due to a higher number of releases over the year, with 279 Xbox 360 games being released compared to 228 PS3 games.

There were a total of 306 PC games released in 2009, although the Wii saw the most with 362 games, averaging almost one a day in 2009.

PC games received the highest average review score of 72.5, while the PS3 was just behind on 72. The average Xbox 360 score was 70, and the Wii scored an average of 67.
