PS3 owners biggest fans of movie based games

17 December 2009

According to a newly published report by online market measurement firm Nielsen, PlayStation 3 owners are the most likely of all console gamers to purchase a movie based title.

Out of the three current generation home consoles (PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii) as well as the PlayStation 2 those who owned PlayStation 3s spent the most on these titles – accounting for 17% of sales.

Movie based titles are defined as those that are released as tie-ins to theatre releases. These include the likes of James Cameron’s Avatar and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel says the report.

Nielsen also pointed out that households who tended towards movie based titles often had children ranging from 6-12; adding that this demographic was the “sweet spot” for this genre.

Least popular among the consoles for movie based title sales was Nintendo’s Wii, which accounted for just 6% of total sales. This is somewhat surprising because the console has captured the largest portion of what is referred to as the ‘casual gaming’ market, selling over 50-million units since its release in 2007.

Beyond the console specific breakdown Nielsen highlighted that those households that buy movie based games are also more likely to purchase movies on DVD.

In addition the study found that those households which purchased movie based games spent roughly double on video games than the average gaming household.

Movie based titles are generally ill received by the hardcore gaming community, with some critics citing a lack of quality or originality as the reason for this. Despite the sentiment this report certainly shows that the movie game sector of the market is a highly lucrative one.
