As expected thanks to the reduction of the retail price and introduction of the PS3 Slim, Sony saw a significant increase in console sales in 2009, while Nintendo and Microsoft were both down on their flagship units for 2009 compared to the previous year.
The PS3 was the only home console which sold more in 2009 than it did in 2008. According to VGchartz Sony sold 10,192,070 PS3s around the world in 2008. In 2009 they reportedly sold 12,363,207 marking an increase of 2,171,137 consoles.
In contrast, Microsoft was down 976,724 consoles sold in 2009 compared to 2008, selling 10,127,190 Xbox 360s in the year. Nintendo also registered a decline but still sold an impressive 21,170,070 Wiis.
In total there were 43,660,467 current generation home consoles sold around the world in 2009 – 2,414,204 less than were sold in 2008; a difference which equates to a 5.52 percent decline in global console sales for the year.
Nintendo lost the most market share going from 53.78 percent in 2008 to 48.49 percent in 2009. The PS3 enjoyed a 6.2 percent increased market share in 2009 compared to 2008. The Xbox 360 also saw a decrease in market share in 2009, going from 24.10 percent in 2008 to 23.20 percent in 2009.
Nintendo has now sold 64,382,443 Wiis in the consoles life time, equating to a market share of 48.78 percent. Microsoft has sold 36,580,655 Xbox 360s giving it an overall market share of 27.72 percent and Sony has sold 31,017,435 PS3s giving it 23.50 percent.
2009 was by far the best year that the PS3 has seen yet. While neither of its competitors could match their previous year’s exceptional performances, the PS3 saw significant growth.
