Infinity Ward may well be the most bankable developer in the world right now. Not only did they create the lucrative Call of Duty series, but late last year they released Modern Warfare 2 which was recorded as the biggest launch in media entertainment history. Within weeks the game broke the 10 million units sold mark, and with it still coming in high in global sales charts it is unlikely that anything else will eclipse its success in the near future.
Last week we reported on the widely circulating rumour that the developer will not be making Modern Warfare 3. The studio had this to say late last year:
“Right now we don’t have a clue what our next game is going to be, and we won’t know what it will be until we finish with Modern Warfare 2, which won’t be for a while.” The studio was also quoted as saying that a new deal with publisher Activision “laid the groundwork and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we’ll have complete control over”.
Based on comments made by the developer as well as those passed by unnamed industry insiders, it would seem that Infinity Ward is leaving the Call of Duty franchise behind for now to work on a new IP that it will have complete control over.
The most recent whisperings come from Destructoid, a relatively trustworthy website who claims that industry sources have stated that the developer’s next game will be an MMO.
“We’ve gotten word that IW is hiring people from Sony Online Entertainment, one of which may be the lead designer of EverQuest II, and that a member of Blizzard employees may also be involved to help Infinity Ward get this new title off the ground. Our Intel seems to indicate that Call of Duty will continue as an annual franchise while IW runs this MMO alongside it.”
