More console price cuts expected in 2010

14 January 2010

Renowned and ever vocal industry analyst Michael Pachter has told Edge Magazine in an interview that his research firm Wedbush Morgan expects another price cut on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2010.

He argues that in order to get back on top of monthly console sales figures, Microsoft will look to reduce the price of its console, and furthermore, that due to lowered manufacturing costs it will be possible to do so as early as April.

Sony has also managed to reduce the manufacturing cost of its flagship console. At launch the company was losing around $205 on every console sold. The figure now is closer to $37.

Although a price cut as early as April is possible, Pachter believes that both systems will have their prices reduced in the US summer which start on June 21 and end on September 21. He predicts however that if Microsoft loses any significant ground to Sony then it will reduce its price earlier.

Pachter believes that Microsoft will introduce a “more feature-packed Xbox 360 in early 2010 (likely with a 250Gb hard drive) at the same $299 price point”.

With just a few months since Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all reduced the prices of their consoles considerably, it seems unlikely that any of them are considering doing so again in the near future. Only time will tell if Pachter’s predictions will ring true in 2010.
