Nintendo sales drop significantly

Nintendo today released its financial results for the period between April 1st 2009 and December 31st 2009, bringing with it the lifetime hardware sales figures for the company’s current generation of consoles.

Global lifetime sales

Wii – 67 million units
DS – 125 million units

According to Kotaku the manufacturer also revealed that 510 million Wii games have been sold since the console was released in 2007. A reported 688 million have been sold for the company’s mobile DS console.

When broken down by region the figures are:

The Americas

Wii – 32 million units
DS – 45 million units

Japan

Wii – 9.7 million units
DS – 29.9 million units

Other

Wii – 25.7 million units
DS – 50 million units

Although these numbers may seem impressive the financial figures are less so. Year on year sales were down 23.1%, operating income down 40.8% and net income down 9.4%.
