UCT sets up gaming club

19 February 2010

University associated gaming clubs are nothing new, but it is good to see that their reach has now spread to the popular University of Cape Town (UCT).

The club was just recently started up by UCT student Mogen Naidoo, who felt that since gaming has a such a huge fan base, and is prevalent among Cape Town students, it made sense to set up a club that would cater to UCT’s gamers, as well as draw more people into the community.

Not only does Naidoo plan to develop the Cape Town gaming community internally, but there are plans for the club to branch out to other universities across SA. Some local universities such as Wits and UJ already have thriving gaming clubs.

The club plans to become involved in tournaments and special events on launch dates, and aims to keep its members up to date allowing for more LANs and tournaments. It also wants to become involved in the national and even international gaming scene, setting up channels which players can use to realise their utmost potential in gaming.

All gamers will be catered for in the club, including PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The main advantage of being affiliated with a University is that the club will receive financial backing,  and will be able to take advantage of the University’s existing infrastructure. Furthermore, gamers at Wits and UJ have already received bursaries as well as university colours for gaming.

So, it’s actually possible to help fund a tertiary education through gaming. This should make those late night CoD4 sessions that much easier to justify to the parents.
