Mweb has added a new Gauteng server dedicated for Valve’s MOBA phenomenon, Dota 2.
This brings up the server count to 3 within the province, giving SA gamers fair infrastructure to put their heroes head-to-head.
The server, which sports 128GB of RAM and 12 cores clocking at 3GHz, sits in the Mweb data centre in Johannesburg and was handed over to Valve for administration.
This server, coupled with the 2 servers in the Cape Town data centre, should result in an improved response times for gamers in South Africa.
“By observing the careful and constant monitoring and tweaking by Valve, we have noted that the servers appear to run at peak performance with an average 60 game instances per physical server,” said Mweb. “So, 60 game instances across 3 servers would provide a combined capacity for 180 game instances. With 10 players in a game, 180 instances should give the region a capacity for 1,800 players gaming at the same time (concurrent users).”
Mweb also elaborated, saying that there have been 1,314 local connections to the server during the course of 24 hours, but international players have also jumped on to the SA server, possibly due to the lack of servers in their respective regions.
“We have been in contact with Valve to see if there is anything that can be done to give priority to gamers in the immediate region with respect to match making and server allocations,” said Mweb. “As we don’t manage these servers directly, we are reliant on the support of the Valve administrators. We can however assure gamers that Valve are highly attentive and our experience has been that they are committed to making the servers work.”

I genuinely don’t understand why the Russians etc play on the SA server. It’s not that they’re not welcome its just that the latency must be so high. How can you be timing last hits or stuns with a 350+ ping? Why would you do that to yourself? There are 3 ‘regions’ right there by them.
I was so stoked when we got local servers despite the long waits for games sometimes. 30avg ping is much better than 150 avg ping on the EU servers.
