SA gets dedicated server patch for Modern Warfare 2 [April Fool]

31 March 2010

It easily remains one of 2009’s biggest controversies, and the lack of dedicated servers for the PC version of Activision’s multiplayer focused military shooter is still a thorn in the side for many.

Unreliable connectivity, excessive bandwidth usage, and high latencies are the order of the day if you want to play MW2 online, and it’s a pity, because it really is an epic game. Dedicated servers on the other hand allow a third party server to host the game, which means that players don’t have to foot the bandwidth bill for hosting. Furthermore, dedicated servers provide lower latencies, and an easy to use match finder.

The lack of dedicated servers is especially devastating for countries like South Africa, as our broadband infrastructure is simply not up to the task of handling individual match making and user hosted first person shooters effectively.

It looks as though Activision has recognised our plight, and has announced  a patch as well as dedicated server software that it will release exclusively to distant regions that have thriving gaming communities, but lack the broadband infrastructure required to make MW2’s matchmaking system viable.

iGame has already received the server software, and will begin testing it today, April 1. Servers are expected to be up and running in the next few weeks. For more information, and to view the announcement details, click here.
