PlayStation 4 streaming games to Vita over Internet?

9 September 2013

Sony has released a series of vidoes showcasing their vision for the PlayStation brand. “Life with PlayStation” showed how a group of students living and studying in a Japan university would be connected through the PlayStation ecosystem.

In the video (at around 1:10), a Japanese girl pauses her PS4 game and packs her Vita into her bag and heads off to college. During a break she pulls out her Vita (in a brilliant white) and logs into her PlayStation 4 remotely using the college’s Wi-Fi connection.

This is the first time the Vita’s remote streaming feature has been advertised to work on a Wi-Fi network that may be outside of the range of the one your PS4 is on. The video did not make it clear if the Vita was connecting over WiFi or 3G/LTE.

Sony’s Suhei Yoshida hinted that PS4 remote play was possible over the internet, but added, “it will depend on your internet connection” as to whether it will work smoothly or not.

If the feature works properly, this brings a whole new dimension to the Vita and to keeping your PS4 connected to the Internet.

Remote play on the Playstation Vita isn’t a new feature, as the PS3 was able to use the Vita as an extra controller and as a second screen with some games.

Sony claims that all Playstation 4 games are playable on the Vita and will stream to the handheld console.
