Developer Blizzard has told industry gaming news publication Gamasutra that they will not hesitate to take legal action against people who are purported to be involved in hacking the StarCraft II beta.
“It’s important to note that we aggressively protect our copyrights and the security of Battle.net,” Blizzard said in a statement. “In addition to providing players with a high-quality online experience for Blizzard Entertainment games, the service is one of the most effective measures we have for preventing piracy of our software over the internet.”
This comes after the developer filed law suits against six alleged hackers earlier this month. The group known as “StarCrack” was thought to be working on a hack which would allow StarCraft II to be played on illegal servers. The suit was dropped a week later, with Blizzard stating that the “matter had been resolved in a way that has allowed us to dismiss the lawsuit.”
Last year Blizzard sued a woman named Alyson Reeves, as well as five other unnamed individuals for running private World of Warcraft servers.
“We’ve put a lot of work into developing Battle.net into the premier online gaming destination for Blizzard Entertainment gamers,” the company said, “and we have a responsibility to protect our rights and maintain the quality and integrity of Battle.net for our players.”
