Dualshock 4 controllers work on PS3

25 October 2013

For anyone not picking up a Playstation 4 at launch, you may still be able to feel up what next-gen consoles will offer by using a Dualshock 4 controller on your PS3.

Replying to questions on Twitter, Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the Dualshock 4 controller will work on the PS3, but requires the use of a USB cable. Only the buttons and triggers currently work, but the core functionality is available to players interested in a slightly better gaming experience.

Yoshida previously noted on Twitter that the Dualshock 4 could not work on the PS3 over a Bluetooth connection, saying that it “works for a while and then drops off,” suggesting that the connection issues are bandwidth related.

Not only does the Dualshock 4 use digital interfaces for the player-facing buttons, but it also has a clickable touchpad, a lightbar on the front for integration and more accurate tracking with the Playstation Eye, and can pipe sound to the player through the small speaker embedded into the bottom of the controller, the same way the Wii U pipes audio to the gamepad.

The controller additionally has an audio jack for stereo headphones to allow players to use the console’s voice chat system to hear their friends in-game while viewers watching the TV may only hear the game’s audio.

Would you buy a Dualshock 4 controller for your PS3? Would the better weighting and new triggers be enough to coax you into being tied to a cable once again, while you wait for better games on the PS4? Let us know in the comments below and the forums.
