Apple biting into motion controls?

Apple has acquired PrimeSense, the company responsible for the sensor technology in the first Kinect device on the Xbox 360. The deal is rumoured to have been worth US$360-million.

PrimeSense has since expanded into building smaller, compact sensors for mobile devices. Microsoft now uses its own sensor technology for the Kinect 2.0 on the Xbox One.

Speculation puts the sensor technology in use with many hypothetical Apple products, such as a refreshed Apple TV and some sort of Apple smartwatch.

It’s conceivable that motion sensors could be built into existing product ranges, from iPhones to desktop iMacs.

PrimeSense has previously discussed their sensors working in mobile devices, able to observe a scene in three dimensions.

PrimeSense says their mobile sensor tech can identify people, details of their body movements and gestures, distinguish between objects such as furniture, and build a 3D map of a room by locating walls and the floor.
