Steam Specials Roundup

18 May 2010

Cheaper uncapped broadband is easily one of the best things that has ever happened to South African gamers. Apart from the obvious benefits that apply to the wider internet population, we can also celebrate unlimited online gaming, and perhaps more importantly, the ability to make the best of digital download services, such as Steam.

“Why is this important?” you ask? Well, it’s important because although we have pretty well priced PC games in SA, Steam’s regular specials frequently offer amazing value, and being able to get in on that action really is a boon for PC gamers.

This week is a particularly good one to have a Steam account with and uncapped ADSL line.

Here’s why:

Portal – Free

That’s right, this awesome first person puzzle solving classic can be added to any Steam account for free before May 24. Watch out, Steam still offers the option to buy the game, so make sure you click on the correct “Instal” tab.

Valve Complete Pack – $99 (R740)

This package includes Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike Condition Zero, Counter-Strike Source, Day of Defeat, Day of Defeat: Source, Deathmatch Classic, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, Half-Life Deathmatch, Source, Half-Life: Blue Shift,  Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Source, Left 4 Dead: Game of the Year Edition, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Ricochet, Team Fortress 2 and Team Fortress Classic. The total cost of all these games separately would be around R1650 via Steam.

Aliens vs. Predator (2010)- $24.99 (R190)

Released just a few months ago, AVP is the long awaited reboot of one of PC gaming’s most beloved franchises. It was a bit of a disappointment, thanks to un-optimised multiplayer, but the triple campaign single player may just be worth the sub-R200 price tag on its own.

Sega Complete Pack – $89.99 (R670)

If you feel like showing Sega some love, then why stop at AVP?

The Sega Complete pack includes Aliens Vs Predator + Swarm Pack, Empire: Total War + all DLC, Outrun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, Rome: Total War Gold + Alexander, Sega Rally, Sonic & Sega All Stars-Rally, Space Siege, Stormrise, Universe at War: Earth Assault, Vancouver 2010 and Virtua Tennis 2009.

The total cost of all these games would be around R2370 via Steam.

Tropico 3 Special Addition- $7.50 (R55)

Released in November last year, the most recent addition to the popular Tropico series is now on special. The special edition includes new maps, avatars and accessories.

Quantz $3 (R22)

This interesting little puzzle game has received solid reviews, and has been praised for its simple yet addictive gameplay and gorgeous visuals. For less than a Mc-meal, it’s a pretty sweet deal.

Dawn of War II Gold Edition (Includes Chaos Rising) $39.99 (R300)

Dawn of War II was one of my favourite PC games of 2009. Its innovative approach to the RTS genre makes it a worthy addition to any fan of tactical command games. The bundle includes the recently released Dawn of War II expansion; Chaos Rising.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood $29.99 (R225)

This critically acclaimed western FPS may be just what the doctor ordered for PC gamers who may be feeling just a little sore about Red Dead Redemption being released exclusively to consoles this week.

Some of these games are on special for a limited time, and will have a limited amount of special price license keys, so don’t dither if you see something you like. Also, these are by no means all the great deals currently running on Steam. Be sure to browse their “Games under $5” and “Games under $10” tabs for more.
