Assassin’s Creed II sells 9 million units

19 May 2010

In the video game industry, a AAA game is considered commercially very successful when it sells around 4 million copies. That makes Assassin’s Creed II super-duper successful, having sold double that since launch.

Despite this, Publisher Ubisoft registered a total loss of $54 million over the year. This is in stark contrast with Ubisoft’s previous fiscal year, where it reported a whopping $85 million net profit.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot blames the recession, but doesn’t offer an explanation as to how companies like Sega, Capcom, Konami and Nintendo managed to turn a profit.

Ubisoft is not alone though, and Sony, THQ and EA also registered losses this year.
