No Man’s Sky – mammoth ambition from 4-man team

9 December 2013

During the VGX 2013 awards over the weekend, 4-man indie studio Hello Games (of Joe Danger fame) unveiled their next, very ambitious project.

No Man’s Sky is an open-world procedurally-generated science-fiction exploration and survival game. And when they say procedurally-generated, they mean it.

From the atoms, upwards – galaxies, stars, planets, space-stations, ecosystems, and lifeforms – everything is generated by the game engine. As developer Sean Murray puts it, if you can see it, you can go and explore it.

In the brief gameplay trailer released, we are shown the life underwater, an exploration of the land surface of a planet, before climbing into a space ship and soaring off toward a space station hanging in orbit.

We also see interstellar travel, space fleet battles, navigation through asteroid fields, and an encounter with some sort of giant sand worm creature.

Speaking in an interview, Murray hinted that the game universe would be persistent through an online component, and each star and its planets will be a world that others are playing in.

Murray described the world as “adversarial” – with its native creatures and environs being hazardous to your survival, the player will need their wits about them.

No release window was discussed, but the game is planned for next-gen platforms (and we hope that means PC too).

This project sounds insanely ambitious, and with a team of only 4 people, I wonder how they’ll be able to pull it off.

This game certainly looks awesome – but I remember the same reaction when I first heard about Spore, and that turned out to be almost entirely disappointing. So I will wait for more details before jumping on the bandwagon..
