DayZ cracks 1 million copies sold within a month

14 January 2014

Bohemia Interactive CEO and co-founder Marek Španěl has updated his blog with the latest sales stats on Day Z.

The game has now passed the one million copies sold mark, all within a month of becoming available on Steam in alpha early access form – DayZ on Steam.

This is a pretty significant achievement – that would be a sales goal for many medium-sized games. Sales might have been encouraged by the game’s prominent position during the Steam holiday sale, despite it not being discounted at all.

DayZ has its roots in the popular ARMA 2 mod, also named DayZ, and created by Bohemia Interactive developer Dean Hall.

Priced at $29.99 (±R310) and launched on 17 December 2013, DayZ attracted over 172,500 zombie hunting survivalists after one day of availability, with a peak of 142,403 online.

Since the game is in alpha at the moment, be aware that your early access purchase will probably translate into many frustrations as the team gets the game up to spec for full release.

In addition to enhancements, there is also a new loot spawn system that can generate loot in some interesting nooks and crannies, and require players to really look and traverse around to gather the resources they need.

There are new locations in the game, particularly an island that featured in ARMA 2, which was highly requested by the community.

The DayZ standalone will be getting weekly content updates, including clothing and weapon items.
