*Global sales figures provided by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo
It’s not that surprising that the PS2 is so far ahead of the pack, given how long it has been on the market. It is also the cheapest home console still available, and it remains the fastest selling console in South Africa. Having said that, it seems as though PS2 sales are finally flatlining, and sales figures have not shown any growth in the past year. Despite this, it is still selling faster than any other console.
The PS3 on the other hand has seen a massive 54% increase in sales over the past year, a fact that can be attributed to the release and price cut of the PS3 Slim.
The Xbox 360 still holds an impressive lead over the PS3 though, although this may not last much longer.
Nintendo is doing particularly badly in South Africa relative to international sales. Globally, the Wii and DS have outsold every other current generation gaming device by a fair margin.
Not only is the PS3 gaining ground on the Xbox 360 in South Africa, but according to VGchartz, global PS3 sales are about 1 million up on Xbox 360 sales so far this year. Sony has sold 3.9 million PS3s this year, whereas Microsoft has sold 2.9 million Xbox 360s.
