EA mum on Titanfall SA cancellation

10 March 2014

Following the announcement that the Titanfall launch would be cancelled in South Africa, there were obviously a number of questions that arose about the situation.

We contacted EA looking for answers, but were told that for now we’re getting nothing more than the official statement, reproduced below:

After conducting recent online tests for Titanfall, we found that the performance rates in South Africa were not as high as we need to guarantee a great experience, so we have decided not to release Titanfall there at this time. We understand this is a disappointment for local fans and will keep them posted on any future plans regarding the release of Titanfall in South Africa.

Here are the question we asked EA. Where the situation has developed, I have added in a note:

  • By announcing that Titanfall will not be released in South Africa, does this mean that South Africans won’t be able to purchase the game through the Origin web store?
    • This appears to be the case as Titanfall was removed from the South African Origin store.
  • If South African gamers do lay their hands on Titanfall (e.g. through importing it or purchase via Origin) will they be able to play the game, or will they be blocked from joining Titanfall servers?
  • Is there any chance that Titanfall will be made available in South Africa at a later date?
  • Is EA South Africa or EA international working on any solutions to make Titanfall a viable game in South Africa, by perhaps working with Microsoft to host local Azure servers?
  • There is talk that a complaint was made under CPA and this led to the cancellation of the launch of Titanfall in SA. Is this true, and if so, what did the complaint say?
  • There is a petition doing the rounds requesting EA and Respawn to make the game available in South Africa? Would such a petition have any impact?
  • Is South Africa’s gaming market so marginal that multiplayer games that require specific server infrastructure such as Azure will not be financially viable?

What are your thoughts on the cancelled launch of Titanfall in SA? Let us know in the comments.
