If you haven’t heard of THQ’s free-to-play online version of the critically acclaimed Company of Heroes series, then you obviously don’t live in South Korea orn China. Pfff.
Well neither do I, so I can’t say very much about it other than it sounds like an awesome idea, and its being released to the USA “this fall.” So our spring then. However, there is no confirmation that our region will be able to access the downloadable game, and no mention has been made of a broader western, or European release.
Apparently the game is a lot like the retail version of Company of Heroes. Players can choose to play as the Axis or Allies, and command their troops around the battlefield in a traditional RTS manner.
The original single player game is included in the free download. The online component however focuses on a persistent multiplayer world where players can unlock hero units, special abilities and so on. Each victory earns players points, which they can spend on the various aforementioned enhancements. If you suck at the game, or don’t have enough to time to earn points by kicking ass and taking names, then you can just buy the points.
Relic assures us though that buying the points will not give players an advantage, although, this seems counterintuitive to the system outlined.
The purchases you make are about making the game more convenient for players who want to level up faster,” said Relic Entertainment’s senior producer Tim Holman, according to a report from VentureBeat. “It doesn’t give you an unfair advantage in a match.”
“We are delighted to bring this award-winning franchise to gamers in a whole new way with the online version of the Company of Heroes experience,” says THQ’s Global Brand Management VP Travis Plane. “Players will benefit from the persistent upgrades and the ability to tailor their armies to really suit their play style making this a unique experience for everyone.”
