As planned, Apple big shot Steve Jobs has announced the follow up to the company’s wildly successful smart phone; the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 4 is an impressive looking piece of kit, and I’m not usually one to get too excited about handheld devices.
Apart from being the thinnest smart phone ever made at just 9.3mm wide, it also looks set to pack a punch, and with a screen resolution that is just ridiculous by current mobile standards (940×640), not to mention the 800:1 contrast ratio, as well as some nifty new additions to the iPhone’s motion controls, gamers may just want to take note.
The iPhone 4 will add a 3-axis gyroscope to the motion control technology that is currently used by the iPhone 3GS. Along with the accelerometer, using the gyroscope the iPhone 4 will deliver 6-axis motion sensing to mobile gaming. While the iPhone 3GS can move side to side and up and down, the iPhone 4 boasts full 3D motion support.
Jobs himself showed off the new technology, playing a game of Jenga on a big screen. Moving the phone dynamically, he was able to move blocks around in ways not possible before on a handheld device. He described the new device as “perfect for gaming.” Apart from the new motion tech, the device also packs the A4 processor, which is used in the iPad.
Journalists who attended the conference reported that there was a notable emphasis placed on the iPhone 4’s gaming capabilities.
Apart from the gaming related goodness built into the iPhone 4, it will also include a 5 megapixel camera with a flash, as well as HD video recording capabilities. It runs on the iPhone 4.0 OS, and promises improved battery life. It is planned for a US release on June 24,
