Trademark monitoring site Superannuation has spotted EA filing for three new trademarks, all of which are titled ‘Syndicate.’ The three filings are fairly standard and exactly what you’d expect for a computer game, digital downloads, and their related marketing and merchandising opportunities.
This bodes well for fans of the series, who have been left hanging since Syndicate Wars was released in 1996. Another good sign is that the Syndicate Wars revival project has been stewing in the background for a while now, since 2007 in fact. EA quietly made an official announcement in 2008 that a new Syndicate game would be developed by Starbreeze Studios. Since then things have been quiet.
However, the application for trademarks might very well indicate that we are that much closer to having something to look forward to.
The franchise was originally created by Bullfrog Productions, headed by Peter Molyneux, whom has been quoted saying that “some sort of next-gen online version of Syndicate would certainly be popular with gamers.”
Whilst Molyneux will not be influencing the direction of the series, as a game development figurehead, his (potentially) prophetic statement can be regarded as a good sign by the optimistic gamers amongst us. Part of EA’s trademark application covers providing an on-line computer game.
Perhaps we will see an online Syndicate game in the future. The franchise premise certainly lends itself to this notion, as it puts players in charge of a militant cyberpunk corporation with the goal of disrupting the operations and capturing the territory of other such organisations, through subterfuge, sabotage, and all out gang warfare.
