Do you know what the world needs more of ? Giant fighting robots, that’s what.
MegaBots Inc. seeks to address the lack of giant fighting mech-walkers in the market right now, and has looked to Kickstarter to help raise the $1.8 million the company needs to build two robo-warriors.
“We grew up watching movies and playing games portraying a future filled with giant robots and mechs. Now the world is full of advanced robotic technology, but few of us get to see it in our everyday lives. It’s tucked away in research labs, worked on at high-tech companies, or sent into space,” said the team behind the project.
“We get to see short YouTube videos and read articles about it, but for the most part, the coolest stuff is off-limits to the public. MegaBots, Inc. uses cutting-edge robotics technology to create the giant piloted fighting robots we were promised during our childhoods!”
After one day of the project being on the crowd-sourcing site, MegaBots had raised close to $20,000 – a small dent in the total required.

If the company does raise enough money, its planned robots will be 3 metres tall and weigh close to 3 tons. As we discussed in the office while I wrote this piece, we would definitely pay to watch giant metal beings beat the heck out of each other.
Unfortunately, as there will be a human pilot in each robot, MegaBots has chosen a slightly safer mode of combat – paintball guns.
“MegaBots are covered in customizable, breakaway armor plating and fire large, paint-filled projectiles at each other at speeds topping 120 miles per hour. As projectiles hit their targets, armor plates shatter and explode, and computers tally critical hits to the robot’s limbs and torso.”
“As more and more hits are taken, robots start to limp, joints start to seize, weapons start to jam, and after enough damage, limbs are completely blown off. The last MegaBot standing wins!”
If you cannot wait for the Kickstarter project to run its course and want your giant robot now, MegaBots will sell you a mech-warrior for the small sum of $999,999.

Great consept, but I think, imho, that tech is not yet ready for those fast kinds of maneuvers we see in all those movies/games they used as referenced. Though they arent aiming for the same thing exactly, look at the DARPA BigDog, they have millions to spend and havent created anything like those mechs these gues want to build.
Still, kudos to them, this is a great project and might lead to something awesome way in the future. If we humans didn’t follow our dreams or aimed for something better, we would still prolly be cavemen. (at least I would be able to sleep in on a Monday morning….)
