I had always kind of thought of S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky as S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, but apparently GSC Game World was just filling out the S.T.A.L.K.E.R-verse with that and Call of Pripyat.
Perhaps the distinguishing feature between all S.T.A.L.K.E.R games to date and the forthcoming S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, will be the new game engine which is being completely rebuilt, and will be compatible with current generation consoles.
Described as “the next chapter in the series,” GSC Gameworld is aiming to release S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 in 2012.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise is loved by some, and not-so-loved by others. On the one hand, it takes place in an intriguing alternate reality version of the now abandoned Russian Chernobyl region, following what is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident ever. The eerie, deserted atmosphere is one of gaming’s most memorable, but sadly, technical bugs and contentious gameplay design choices prevented it from reaching its true potential.
Here’s to hoping that S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 will be what everyone was hoping for in the first game.
