Those of you who decided to skip Evolve, don’t feel bad.
The game is great, but its tedious, repetitive progression system is its downfall. I have spent a few hours with it and I am pretty much over it already.
This got me thinking: what games can you play that will give you a similar experience to Evolve without having to spend R800, plus whatever the DLC costs?
Presenting – Don’t play Evolve, try these games instead.
Titanfall
Titanfall takes on the whole “man versus beast” as well as Evolve does – if you can call a giant robot a beast.
The core mechanic matches that of Evolve: hunt down huge enemies as a team, and then it’s your turn to be the hunted.
The game’s fast, intense combat always leaves me wanting more, and battling a player when he pulls out his Anti-Titan is always exciting.
Left 4 Dead
Evolve is all about co-op, and so is Left 4 Dead. In both games four players run around killing enemies, completing objectives, and keeping each other alive.
Left 4 Dead is all about teamwork as you traverse the city or city outskirts and fight off various types of zombies. When one player strays from the pack, then he or she will probably be outnumbered and the team will have to run to aid their rebellious teammate.
There are also tons of mods available for the Steam version of Left 4 Dead, like the Teletubbies zombie skin.
Dying Light
Dying Light’s Be the Zombie mode is the closest you are going to get to players versus player gameplay that Evolve offers.
One player is the Night Hunter, an advanced zombie tasked with hunting down the other players and killing them off one by one. The other players have to hunt this zombie down and kill it while watching their backs.
The players and the zombie have their own strengths and weaknesses that will prove vital during a match, and you will be required to work as a team to take down the zombie.
Monster Hunter
Monster Hunter has always been on the forefront of monster killing.
Players start off small by killing mediocre-sized creatures before slowly working their way up to mountain-sized gargantuans.
Monster Hunter also boasts four-player co-op, where players from all over the world can join in and help you take down the monsters you are facing.
Sure, the monster is not controlled by a player, but the idea of hunting and killing gigantic creatures is along the lines of what Evolve offers.
The Hidden
4 versus 1 is so February 2015, it’s all about 8 versus 1 now. In The Hidden, 8 players are tasked to hunt down an overpowered boss. The boss, controlled by another player, has super-fast speed, high attack power, and heat vision that can spot enemies through walls.
When you manage to kill another player, guess what? You eat their body to get your health back. Sound familiar?
